Think of who is really behind this. Ecologists, green people, etc? No, Republicans! Why, because the insurance companies made huge profits last time when Carter did this. How, because people got tickets for "speeding" at the same speeds they alway have driven. The insurance companies now get to jack up the rates on millions of drivers that previously drove lawfully and carefully. They get to charge more in a lower-risk environment. They couldn't ask for more.

Think of the revenue collection opportunities for the states and localities. All those tickets will help make up for the deficits. It helps bail out the GOP.

If that law doesn't pass, the GOP can blame the Dems for obstructionism. If it does pass and Obama is the Prez, then he will inherit an unpopular law and it will be difficult for him to end.

So, don't be fooled. I have always maintained that Carter was ousted in part because people thought it was a stupid law and Reagan promised to end it.

Wow! you must have insider tips on politics! Anyways, at this point in the game, I dont really see any clear distinction between Dems and Reps. They're all the same: POLITICIANS! All they do is promise us ANYTHING just to get elected, and when they do, they more often than not, abandon all those promises! When the Reps run Congress, we had our share of problems. Now that the Dems are at the helm, gas is at all time high.

So what do you suggest we all do?

I'm with"carlgo". Ever notice most of the driving laws passed just reduce insurance company risks (read payouts), while I've yet to see any reduced insurance costs.

+2 ... they feel compelled to wring hands and "do something"
to "protect/save us" from every possiblity in life. The bill turns into
500+ pages of add-ons, pork and bs, and the "result" does absolfookin
lutely nothing to make life better, easier, less costly, etc., imo

So what do you suggest we all do?

You are right, of course in that the lines blur some when the realities of governing set it. The US is like a huge container ship. You can't make quick high-speed turns, but it can be veered a little and over a period of time a course adjustment can be set to avoid the storms on port and starboard.

Hmmm. Pretty nautical.

What to do? Jeez! A lot of stuff.

Speed-up the development of some core technologies like batteries, fuel cells, truly safe nuc plants, super-conductivity, cost-effective solar cells, better lights, refrigeration technology, etc, etc.

Then plan to use these technologies, lay out a road map so everyone will know the plan.

Plan for changes. Some of these technologies just might not work out for a while, or new ideas will come along. Don't get stubborn about any particular technology. Some will have to be abandoned, others will emerge.

If there is a path and a plan, then we will reach our goal.

What is going to happen is that the price of gas will drop just enough to put off these technologies and keep our dependency on oil. That is why there must be a plan and a commitment to stay with it no matter what.

A cynic might say Bush went to Saudi Arabia not to plead for lower prices, but to remind them that they are killing the golden goose.

driving down the garden state parkway(NJ) yesterday, there must have been 20 people pulled over throughout. They have a stretch where they changed the speed limit to 55 and that must have been one of the reasons. I drove between 65-70 to go with the trafick flow, cause I just don't see myself staying at 55mph. That would bore me to sleep if I did.

I think driving slowly is a hazard for me. I'm not kidding when I say I doze off in slow traffic
