Wow, I love that mule! Looks like a rough and tough 3-series wagon! I can't wait to see what the next X3 will looks like!

These are the first pictures of what will eventually become the 2010 BMW X3. Yes, it's a long way off, but the current X3 just received its midcycle refresh for 2007, so don't expect the fully redesigned model for at least another few years. Clearly, it will continue to ride on the same platform as the current 3 Series which should mean shared engine and drive systems as well. Obviously, the 3 Series wagon sheetmetal doesn't reveal much about the styling of the next X3, but there are a few differences between this mule and the current X3.

From the rear, this test mule appears to have a redesigned suspension setup compared to the current X3. That lower control arm looks pretty close to a wishbone in shape, but without a better angle it's hard to tell for sure. The cross brace is new too, but appears temporary. Same goes for the support arm bolted to the protruding mount on the side. The rear view also shows how much wider the next X3 is compared to the 3 Series, hence the big fender flares necessary to contain the relatively tame tires.

Looks like a cross between an audi Q7 and a touareg. Still, it is better looking than the current X3.

Goodman,
I don't like wagons/"touring", whatever one calls them.

I/we like the X5 and their ilk due to the seating position
being higher. I have a Vette that's on the floor; if I
wanted a regular car, as in BMW car, the last one on my
list would be a "touring"/wagon edition of BMW. Diff'n strokes...

I don't like big cars, SUVs (and SAVs) included. If I needed cargo capacity, a sport wagon would do. I don't like the higher centre of gravity. BMW claims the X3's centre is only 2" higher than a standard 3-series, but honestly it doesn't feel like that at all. More like 6" higher and an additional 800 lbs of weight.

Body in these pics is in no way any reflection of future X3. Shape will not be known till early next year.
Just a jacked up station wagon testing mechanics for future X3/X4.

i like how they sort of drifted to a 3 series look with the head and tail lights (sort of the way they changed the x5 headlights) but hope to god they dont make it as low as a wagon.

like a BMW Allroad.
Strap in the N54 and a 6MT and Sign me up for ED!

I've been looking for a replacement for my POS volvo, and I want AWD, space for my dog / crap and a 6 speed. You have no clue how hard it is to get a 6mt X3 or 328xiT.
But I'm not paying $42k to eat the depreciation of a 6mt X3 thats about to be obsolete with a better engine but its sooo tempting.
