And yes, the 3.0 is more susceptible to this problem, simply because how long the head is. But this problem is not common unless the engine was overheated. In that case, the extra expansion rate of the aluminum, which the head is... ends up pulling the headbolt threads a bit in the block to the point they can't be re-torqued. But nothing a brand new shiny long block can't fix

The car had about 56k on the dial. The car did overheat because of the coolant leak caused by the crack. They did not specify how the head got cracked. I am however getting a 2 year parts/labor warranty in all the work done which is a plus. The car is running good as new right now, but I'm taking it easy. More of like a 'break in' period.

how long passed after the overheating to this issue? Only reason I ask is I had the car overheat due to a coolant leak (dealer did not properly reattach cooler after replacing thermostat) and I am wondering if this is something that could happen with my 3.0 in the future? It has been a few months so I was just curious if this was an issue you would know about immediately, or if it can develop over time?

WOOHOO!!!! So glad to hear that they worked everything out! I was very surprised when BMW decided to just replace my transmission due to problems I was having (2-1 downshift slam). With other vehicles I have had in the past it has been a constant battle.
Glad you have your X back. I always miss mine when it goes in for service.

If you overheated enough to cause problems, you would have known it pretty quick. The only time you usually have problems after overheating is when it overheats really bad, like when someone doesn't pull over and continues to drive... |
